Changing the Question: How to collect data which is closer to the truth

Description of the content of the workshop: The workshop will introduce a number of techniques for writing questions to reduce biases and dishonesty in online surveys. It will also cover techniques to increase respondent engagement and increase the quality of data collected. Participants will put these techniques into practice via the re-writing of a provided questionnaire.

Goals of the workshop: To improve the participants' knowledge of techniques for creating engaging surveys which encourage respondents to answer honestly (and to spot when they are not)

Information about the instructor: Steve Wigmore comes originally from an advertising agency background but has been working in market research for the last 15 years. He has held a number of roles but and is currently Director of Modern Surveys at Kantar.

Collecting and Analyzing Twitter Data Using R

Description of the content of the workshop: This workshop provides an overview about Twitter data and how to collect and analyze it using R. Participants learn how to access Twitter’s API in order to collect data for their own research projects. A number of examples illustrate how to preprocess and analyze the content and meta-information of Tweets. Participants are encouraged to have their own installation of R ready in order to take part in the practical exercises.

Goals of the workshop: Learning Goals: 1) Getting a better understanding of Twitter data, and thus, the potentials and limitations of using it in research projects. 2) Being able to collect Twitter data using R, and 3) Being able to perform explorative analyses of the data using R

Necessary prior knowledge of participants: Basic knowledge in R or any other statistical software/language (SPSS, Stata, SAS, Python)

Information about the instructors: Dorian Tsolak is a PhD candidate at Bielefeld University. His research interests cover stereotypes, racism and migration across the field of computational social science. Stefan Knauff is a master student at Bielefeld University interested in methods of computational sociology and research on inequality and globalization.
