Title English: Internet-Usage within a Delphi-study
Abstract English: The Delphi-method is a structured expert questioning, which goal it is to find solutions for complex problems with the help of all the contributions of all persons involved. For this purpose experts of a certain field are asked to take part in a first questioning about a special problem. All the statements are evaluated by the researcher and all the results (as group-opinions) are reported to the experts. Under the influence of the group judgement the experts are requested to take part in a second questioning, then they get another feedback about the results etc. This happens until a consent concerning the problem definition is reached and/or until the opinions do not change any more. The experts remain anonymous among themselves and often towards the researcher.
In more recent time the internet is discovered as a tool for the Delphi method, since one promises oneself among other things an easier access to an expert sample.
This talk reports about the experiences and the log file analyses of an on-line Delphi called "How do we succeed within evaluation studies?" and discusses among other things the following problems:
· How easy is it to find experts within the internet?
· How can one affect the response rates?
· Is the possibility to interrupt and continue the survey later on used by the experts?
· How is the connection between expert status and stopping the participation within a questioning?
· How is the connection between expert status and stopping the participation over the different questionings?
· What can we learn for future on-line Delphi studies in detail and for on-line surveys in general?

Title Deutsch: Die Nutzung des Internet im Rahmen einer Delphi-Studie

Title English: User and Non-user Behaviour - Illustrated by the largest Internet Retailer
Abstract English: The intensified business competition, brought about by the globalization of trade and deregulation, and the advent of information technologies, most recently exemplified by the Internet, have dramatically changed the structure of corporations and have catapulted intangibles into the role of the major value driver of business in developed economies.
The operational activities also in the marketing field will be coordinated differently then in the past. In the last ten years brands received an augmented attention, frequently with the perception that brands are the most important asset for a firm. The possession of brands is a commercial impact for a company and one of the keys for higher prices. This higher price stands for more steadiness. A proof for that are the published rankings of brand equity from global firms. These rankings focuses not only on the consumer brands but also on service brands as McDonald's or Internet brands as google. For example google was marked as the "brand of the year" 2002 from Interbrand. The outcome of this is an augmented meaning of Internet brands and lead to the conclusion that Internet brands should not be neglected as a value component for the firm and the customer.

This study tries to show why and how users and nonusers from a specific internet retailer have different opinions. Therefore the brand equity, dimensions of brand equity and selected marketing mix elements are compared. To explain these differences concepts from the relationship marketing will be used.
Increasing revenues by internet retailers indicates that there is a clear tendency to purchase through the internet and the consumer should be more in the focus of interest. The findings of this survey should give clues for a specific treatment of customers and potential customers.
Students from the University of Zurich were interviewed with a online survey. The examination is based on an already established framework from Yoo, Donthu and Lee (2000) and would be adapted for internet retail brands. There was a try to get all students from the economic scientific faculty for an e-mail survey. But only every ninth participant got the brand of the virtual retailer and could express his opinion.

Title Deutsch: "User" und "Non-User" Verhalten - Illustriert am Beispiel des grössten Internethändlers

Title English: On the integration of the Internet into science communication
Abstract English: The Internet has changed science in multiple ways, for instance through broadening the access to scientific data and information, offering new channels of social communication such as e-mail, chat or on-line conferences, or facilitating large scale scientific collaborations by means of specific collaboration tools. Already in the mid nineties a debate has started on how the Internet would affect science communication. New communication models have been presented reaching from a mere modernised version of the traditional science communication model which had evolved over the last two hundred years to transformed and totally new models of so-called "collaboratories" (see e.g. Crawford, Hurd and Weller 1996; Hilgartner 1995). The debate has produced extremely technology-optimistic positions such as the opinion that "anything not on the Web will be neglected" (Odlyzko 2001) as well as rather sceptic statements on the extent to which scientific disciplines are willing to change their differing communication conventions (e.g. Kling and McKim 2000). The proposed paper carries out a stock taking of Internet use for scientific communication at the current point in time.
This stock taking is based on a survey on the Internet use in five scientific disciplines (astronomy, chemistry, computer science, economics, and psychology) and seven European countries (Switzerland, Germany, Italy, UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Denmark) which was carried out in the summer of 2003. The dataset consists of more than 1,400 scientists carrying out R&D in the listed disciplines and countries. The data permits a detailed assessment of the integration of Internet applications into science communication. The analysis answers in particular two sets of questions:
1. How do scientists use the Internet to collect data and retrieve information as inputs to scientific work? What factors determine whether scientists use the Internet or traditional methods, e.g. what are the roles of age and professional experience, computer literacy, and the scientific discipline?
2. How do communication models differ between scientific disciplines? What is the role of the Internet for the diffusion of research results among different scientific communities?

Title Deutsch: Zur Integration des Internets in die Wissenschaftskommunikation

Title English: Determinants of participation in online access panels
Abstract English:

Title Deutsch: Determinaten der Teilnahmebereitschaft in Online-Panels

Title English: E-voting: participation, turn out, and digital divide
Abstract English: 7. In this paper we report the results of 14 experiments with an e-voting system, in five sites (two municipalities, two community networks, and a trade union) in four countries (Italy, UK, France, Finland) (1). We organized in every site three subsequent voting sessions with the same group of voters. Before the experiments we asked respondents to complete a questionnaire, and the same was done after the first and the third e-voting experiment. In the questionnaire we asked about personal characteristics, such as the level of computer literacy, and opinions about the role of ICT in society, and questions related to usability of the system and trust in the safety and secrecy of the voting technology. The field experiments were held in winter and spring of 2003. In this paper we discuss the following questions:
- Does the usability of and trust in the system influence the use ( = participation in the ballot)?
- Does this change over time (learning effects)?
- What are the differences between different social groups, and between countries; and is a digital divide visible?
- Finally, e-voting also enables longer voting periods. Do logfiles of the voting sessions indicate that these longer voting periods result in higher turnout? If so, for which types of voters?
Based on the data of two experiments, we found interesting results (2, 3):
- the organizational dimensions of usability are rather weak,
- the trust in the secrecy (privacy) of the system is very low,
- this changes over time but not in a uniform way,
- usability, trust, and use are related to the digital divide,
- there is no relation between turnout and duration of the vote,
- that trust and usability seem to influence the outcomes.
We now are analyzing the full set of data. By answering these empirical questions we aim to contribute to the understanding of the effect of new information technologies and media on the quality of the political process.

Title English: The Effect of Motivating Elements on Response Strategies in Online Surveys
Abstract English: The widespread use of online questionnaires in survey research raises the need for systematic research on the particularities of this new technology. This presentation outlines the theoretical and practical consequences from three combined online experiments (n = 968). As this research project was set up only with the intention to study online response behaviour, it provides answers to questions from multiple points of view. At first, bivariate analyses uncover new results and resolve contradictions in current research: The inclusion of graphic features like coloured icon scales (in comparison to numerical rating scales) and progress indicators lowers overall dropout rates. In addition, the precision of progress estimation was controlled as a 3-level factor (optimistic, pessimistic, and realistic). This showed a higher impact on compliance than the simple presence or absence of a progress indicator.
Secondly, the questionnaire design enables a verification of cognitive theories of survey response. Krosnick and Alwin (1987) distinguish between two basic response strategies, Optimizing and Satisficing. Their theory predicts an intervening influence of the individual motivation (in terms of cognitive effort) on response effects. Several reactive and non-reactive indicators (e.g. number of backups, response latency, and size of response-order effects) were evaluated with multiple logistic regression models. The results show that the offline approved model also leads to a good explanation for online response behaviour. Within this framework, a closer look at the treatments reveals that motivating elements like icon scales and progress indicators increase the overall willingness to participate but simultaneously decrease the cognitive effort spent on the response task: Researchers may pay for higher response rates with a loss in data quality.

Title English: Online and other methods of data collection in employee surveys: A comparison
Abstract English: Employee and other kinds of surveys in organizations are increasingly carried out as self-administered surveys using online technologies like intra- or internet. The decision whether more traditional (Borg 2003) or online methods should be used must be based on a careful considera-tion of the various dimensions determining the usefulness of the different methods with respect to the concrete project. In fact, the application of online data collection methods in employee sur-veys may circumvent some of the methodological problems involved in other types online sur-veys (Couper 2001, Deutschmann & Faulbaum 2001). Nevertheless there remain some other im-portant problems. In the presentation the various dimensions relevant for the decision for or against a certain method are analyzed and concrete empirical results comparing online surveys with other types of surveys are given.

Title English: The structure and organisation of the open source project KDE
Abstract English: The large-scale open source project KDE is a worldwide group of IT-professionals who work on a joint product primarily over the Internet. Their work, which is a commons, is protected through special licences so that private persons/companies will not be able to derive any proprietary rights. The project is part of a big social movement around this licence. In the project software (here: desktop software for Linux/Unix-derivates and other applications), documentations and translations are produced. The large-scale project is divided into small and smallest subprojects. Communication and production take place over the Internet. The most important means for communication are mailing lists/chat systems. The versioning system is the backbone of the production. Face-to-Face-meetings are seldom but very important for the community.
The project participants are highly qualified, primarily male, between 20 and 30 years old and are inhabitants of the industrial nations, especially Germany. They contribute to the project on a voluntary basis in their spare time and see their work as a hobby.
The most important group of the large-scale open source project is the inner circle of the developers which is a loosely coupled group of long-time project participants without leading figures. The members of the inner circle have a high reputation which they have gained through constant work for the project (meritocracy). They have important positions in the project such as project leadership, release coordinator. They also have project maintaining functions, i.e. they are responsible for the maintenance of the important communication and production tools. A further task of the inner circle is to keep the project together with the help of sanctions. Moreover, it has to ensure that companies comply with the licence agreement.
The whole project is characterized by cooperation and a common interest. However, it is coordinated in a special kind of hierarchy (meritocracy) and participants also compete for certain positions within the project.

Title English: Are online-offline differences in personality test scores due to increased self-disclosure?
Abstract English: There is considerable evidence that online versions of existing offline psychological questionnaires can have acceptable psychometric properties and be qualitatively equivalent to offline versions. However, the score distributions observed may often differ from accepted norms developed using traditional versions of the tests. Additionally, a number of studies have been performed where participants have been randomly allocated to online or offline testing conditions. Again, differences in score distributions have been observed.

This phenomenon has especially been noted in the context of constructs related to negative affect (e.g. depression, anxiety, neuroticism), but also for other measures (social desirability, career preference). People tend to get higher scores on these tests when completing them online than one would expect from offline normative data or matched offline samples. One explanation for this revolves around the "internet disinhibition" effect, and the idea that increased anonymity may lead people to disclose more sensitive information about themselves online.

In the current study, 61 undergraduate students were randomly assigned to either online (web based, completed under conditions of their choosing) or offline (individual, pencil and paper, supervised) conditions. They completed measures of Neuroticism, Social Desirability, two behavioural measures of self-disclosure (based on the number of "sensitive" questions a person chose to answer) and also indicated how identifiable they perceived themselves to be.

Levels of self-disclosure did not differ significantly across conditions using either measure. However, students in the online condition scored significantly higher on Neuroticism, and also (contrary to predictions) rated themselves as more identifiable.

These results suggest that online-offline differences in personality test scores may occur for reasons other than increased self-disclosure. Possible explanations of the current findings, and priorities for further investigation will be discussed.

Title English: R U There? Using Text Messaging as a method of contact in Wireless
Abstract English: The number of mobile telephone users within the United States today exceeds 140 million. As the penetration of mobile telephone subscribers increases over the next decade in the United States, using mobile telephones as a mode of data collection for sample surveys that have traditionally used only fixed-land-line telephones will become essential. At the present time, contacting individuals through cellular telephones is a daunting challenge that requires numerous call attempts both to locate working numbers and to reach potential respondents.

Even today, however, wireless phone technologies and services may provide more efficient avenues for contacting wireless subscribers other than simply calling them. The most promising of these is text messaging because it can make contact with cell phone users and deliver survey information as well.

In this paper we describe an experiment that examines the effectiveness of using text messaging as the primary mechanism for contacting wireless phone subscribers. The proposed research grew from unsystematic attempts to use text messaging in a 2003 national survey using a wireless phone number sampling frame. The experiment to be reported here will compare response rates to a short survey across six conditions: three ways of contacting wireless subscribers for two major United States providers with well developed text message tracking systems but different cost structures. Specifically, the three methods for contacting subscribers include: sending a text-message, sending a message as an advance notice prior to calling and calling directly without sending any kind of message (the control condition). We will use two different providers to assess variation in response rates across provider and to capture some of the variation in text messaging penetration and cost in the United States wireless market. We also assess whether using text messaging to contact a sample of wireless subscribers increases the efficiency of the wireless phone as a mode of administration for surveys even under present conditions. The findings of this research along with continual improvements in wireless phone technology and services will better prepare us for the potentially changing landscape of telephone surveys.

Title English: The role of ICTs in maintaining interpersonal relationships
Abstract English: This paper gives a summary of a survey by which we make an empirical attempt to reveal the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the private social network of a Hungarian town. The scope of the survey is reduced to the personal, non-business interactions. The analysis of the communication network is designed on multiple levels. o n o ne hand, we can analyze o n the level of individuals who have relationships, communicate with each other with different frequency, use some kind of communication tools. o n the other hand, the interactions itselves between these individuals can also be the unit of the analyzis. For this two-level investigation we have built two different tools for collecting information: a personally administered questionnaire and a self-administered communication diary. The questionnaire was aimed to investigate the quality, the spacial extention and the density of the social network. The self-administered diary enables us to register every single private “communication act” of individual during an entire week. Our basic aim is to discover the general forms and structure of the communication networks, including all sorts of communication. We attempt to define the typical communication network forms and the groups that typically create and maintain them. The communication networks of certain segments will be identified by their particularities and the characteristics of their structure.

Title English: Qualitative Discussion Groups: An Online Contribution to Research Methods
Abstract English: Discussion groups make a versatile for long-term and evaluative research if combined with qualitative interpretation.
Questions and layout of the discussion group are designed according to the customer's needs. The discussion group ("eMonitor GuestBook") is then launched online, the target group is asked to give their inputs. Through pre-arranged periods, the customer receives interpretations of the input so far and, if required, consulting concerning the discussion group's topics. Thus, the customer is enabled to specify his questions as the discussion group's proceedings go on and so to interactively make his results more precise.
An example is used to explain the performance of this method.

Titel Deutsch: Qualitative Foren: ein Online-Beitrag zur Forschungsmethodik
Abstract Deutsch: Foren sind ein originäres Instrument der Online-Kommunikation.

Session 14: Respondenten- Motivierung
Beitragsgsart: Vortrag

Title English: Motivations underlying the intention to participate in Internet-based research
Abstract English: The rapid growth of the Internet has opened new opportunities for collecting and distributing research information worldwide. Market researchers have long recognized the advantages of Internet-based surveys, the most important being lower costs and faster response (e.g., Schuldt and Totten, 1994; Ilieva, Baron and Healey, 2002). However, even though more and more people are becoming increasingly familiar with using the Internet, it is questionable whether the average respondent is ready to participate in online research and what exactly motivates respondents to participate in Internet-based research. Therefore, this study investigates the motivations underlying the intention to participate in online surveys. Clearly, the motivation and intention to participate in an online survey are determined by two key factors, namely the characteristics of the study as well as the acceptance of the technology behind online surveys. Firstly, certain characteristics of the survey are important to stimulate respondents to participate, the most important being the topic of the questionnaire as well as the incentives used (e.g., Church, 1993; Heberlein & Baumgartner, 1978). Secondly, it is imperative to assess the potential respondents' attitude towards the technology inherent in online questionnaires. Hereby, researchers should also examine individual differences with respect to some key personality traits such as self-efficacy and innovativeness, which are crucial to explain why people use a certain technology and participate in Internet-based research (e.g. Agarwal & Prasad, 1998; Dabholkar & Bagozzi, 2002; Venkatesh & Davis, 1996). Hence, in order to examine this research question, we use a core model based on the Technology Acceptance Model, and test for direct as well as moderating effects of respondent traits (self-efficacy and innovativeness) and situational factors (incentives and topic salience). The data for this study was collected in Germany via a survey in a face-to-face data collection. The data was analysed using a Partial Least Square (PLS) Latent Path Model and our results confirm that respondent and research-related factors are important moderators of the acceptance of the technology and hence the intention to participate in online surveys.

Session 10: Neue Methoden der Internetforschung
Beitragsgsart: Vortrag

Title English: Online Experiments in Commercial Market Research
Abstract English: Online experiments are widely used nowadays in scientific research. However this methodological approach is seldom found in commercial market and social research. This surprises since online surveys are an ideal platform by offering the chance to systematically vary stimulus material. In this submission the methodological approach including some general results for three online experiments carried out for the group of the "Öffentlich-rechtlichen Versicherer" is presented. Furthermore implications for the application of online experiments in commercial market and social research are drawn.
The first experiment's goal was the optimization of website content featured on insurance sites. The stimulus material consisted of different information pages with the topic "private retirement insurance", in which pictures, text styles, structure, and text amount varied. Approx. 250 people participated in the experiment. The results show how information pages on the internet should be designed in the insurance branch.
In the second experiment, a suitable and catching name for a website had to be found. Stimulus material consisted of the result page of a search engine, in which the different names, contents, text lengths, and position of the entry were systematically varied. Approx. 240 people participated in this experiment. As a result, one favorite name could be clearly determined and general recommendations in respect to search engine results be given.
In the third experiment the optimal combination of picture and text material for the product "occupational disability insurance" was investigated. The stimulus material consisted of website excepts which were fully randomized created. In respect to text, the text style (e.g., "angst induction", "hard facts", or "without reasons") as well as text structure (continuous text, question-answer- and bullet-point-style) were altered. Furthermore, the number of pictures (1, 2, or 3) and the picture motive (e.g., "young people in jobs", "individual people", or "accident motives") were varied. It was determined how the combination of text in picture on insurance websites can be optimized and which effects e.g. on text appeal, objectivity, and image can be expected.
As a conclusion the possibilities of online experiments in commercial market and social research are presented and areas of application beyond the insurance branch are pointed out.

Beitragsgsart: Vortrag

Title English:The application of online-systems for voting
Abstract English: One can observe a steady increase in the number of elections and votes held in public as well as in private organisations. This requires an enormous amount of organizational and logistic effort, let alone the amount of time needed to cast one's vote at the ballot box. Therefore particularly (private) businesses will be interested in carrying out elections and votes via computers and the internet. This is the task the Research Group Internet Voting is looking into.
Two examples will be used to illustrate and discuss limitations and potential of online voting. During the works council election of T-Systems CSM in 2002, 1777 people, equalling 51 % of voters, cast their vote online (voting via either electronic polling stations or their workplace). During the staff council election at the Landesbetrieb für Datenverarbeitung und Statistik (LDS) in Brandenburg in 2002, more than 500 people were asked to cast their vote at electronic polling stations.
Using these two examples it will be demonstrated how elections via the internet should be designed and organized in order to meet the electoral requirements of secrecy of the ballot and electoral freedom. The role of signature cards, encryption technologies and the network design will be investigated. Adding to this we will present our specific concept and illustrate how internet voting was executed.
Furthermore, the sociological assessment will be considered. In addition to the two elections attending observations as well as group-discussions with the members of 7 election committees were conducted at T-Systems CSM; at LDS a quantitative survey of the voters plus a group discussion with the members of one election committee was used for analysis purposes. This allowed for validating the utility and usability of this new voting process from different points of view (voters/election committee). These results will also be presented and reviewed here.

Session 5: Online-Mitarbeiter-Befragungen
Beitragsgsart: Vortrag

Title English: Online- and offline-employee surveys in theory and practice
Abstract English:Prior to the planning of projects in the field of employee surveys, principals more an more rely on the question whether online data collection has more advantages or disadvantages.
This contribution defines three key questions which are of relevance when planning an online employee survey. These questions are discussed by means of practical experience from the competion "Best employers Germany 2003". Within this project employees in about 120 German companies were surveyed, partly online and offline.
The three key questions are:
a) Cost-effectiveness of online data collection
i. e. for which companies or project constellations is online data collection advisable? In particular the different cost structure of online and offline data collection is discussed.
b) Acceptance of online data collection
i. e. in which manner does the reponse rate differ when interviewing online of offline? Which specific questions or fears occur on the employees´ side? To answer these questions, inquiries to employee hotlines provided during the survey period in different companies were subjected to a qualitative analysis.
c) Reliability,
i. e. are results from online surveys comparable to results from "traditional" employee surveys? What should be kept in mind when comparing respective data from different sources?
In this contribution specific problems which are often overseen when planning online employee surveys are addressed. Furthermore measures are outlined which will help to ensure the success of online surveys in companys or other organizations.

a) Rentabilität der Online-Datenerhebung,
d. h. für welche Unternehmen bzw. Projektkonstellationen
Was muss beim Vergleich entsprechener Befragungsdaten beachtet werden?
